    Stephen Everitt's grant for land in Zavala's empresa

    Land Grant in Lorenzo de Zavala's Empresa Issued to Stephen H. Everitt Signed by George W. Smyth and George A. Nixon, Together with a Plat Map and a Town of Menard Stock Certificate. The grant is on four pages of a bifolium, 8" x 12"; San Agustin; September 24, 1834. Written on sealed paper in Spanish, the document awards Everitt a quarter of a league of land in Zavala's Empresa. Zavala had received a grant in March 1829 which authorized him to settle 500 families in southeast Texas. Zavala was forced into exile in June 1830 moved to New York, where he would transfer his interests in the grant to the Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company. Archibald Hotchkiss, agent for the Land Company, is listed as Zavala's agent in this transaction. Signed by John Bevil, and George A. Nixon in February 28, 1835 certifying that the grant had been copied into ledgers. With an endorsement by George Washington Smyth noting Everitt's payment of "thirty-six dollars & fifty cents, the amount in full of government dues."

    The grant is framed alongside a period plat map (12" x 17") of the land described in the grant as wells a Town of Menard Stock certificate engrossed to Everitt. Overall size of the frame is 53" x 38".

    Zavala and Smyth were both signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Bevil established Bevil's Settlement in the mid-1820s, and would later attend the 1835 consultation as it's delegate.

    Condition: The grant has light dampstaining in the margins, with paper loss along the integral fold. Map is gently toned with bright paper. Stock certificate is toned, and has a single crease at top left. Included in the framed display in a filing envelope made in circa 1844 that was used to file the grant in settling Everett's estate.
