Lachlan McIntosh Autograph Letter Signed "Lach.n McIntosh." One page, 8" x 11.5", Skidaway Island [Georgia], March 16, 1787, to John M. McIntosh, his son, regarding the sale of land. He writes, in part: "Your Letter of yesterday Evening was delivered to me last night by Mr. Threadcraft's Negro Moses...I saw M.Gillivray last week in Savannah...As Mr. M.Gillivray did not say a word to me about Land, it would be showing too much eagerness on my part, & giving him too much advantage to go to Town on purpose & make the first offer again. I think 'twould be better for you & him to take a ride together here where every thing will be laid clearly before him - and which he will not hesitate to do if he is serious in the business."

Following the end of the Revolutionary War in 1783, Gen. Lachlan McIntosh (1725-1806) returned home to Georgia to find his plantation destroyed. Believing that he was owed some kind of compensation for his funds spent and damages incurred, he entreated the government of Georgia for a full repayment of £12,170. The Assembly agreed to repay a portion of the requested amount for those funds used to pay his troops and supply them with food and other equipment. He continued to press his claim, however, assuring his creditors that the state would indeed pay him for his losses. Instead of using the money to rebuild his ruined lands, he purchased additional land at Skidaway Island.

Expertly silked on both the recto and verso, repairing minor tear at lower edge and small hole in the middle of the letter from opening at the wax seal; the text is bright and wholly intact.
