King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella Document Signed. One page, 12" x 8", no place; April 5, 1479. The document is signed by both as "I, the King" and "I, the Queen". A royal pardon issued for Fernando de Monroy, who had been charged with being involved in the capture of the Fortress of Newcastle (Castlenovo), which had been seized by his son Don Riego de Monroy. The pardon ensured Monroy's lands would not be seized and that he would not be imprisoned. It should be noted however that no such pardon was offered for Monroy's son, who would still be treated as a traitor and whose lands could be easily seized.

On verso is docketing and a royal embossed seal, 2" in diameter. The seal reads, "FERNANDUS: ET HELISABET DEI: GRA: REGES: CASTELLE LEGIONIS ET CICILLE", which translates to "Ferdinand and Elisabeth by the grace of God Rulers of Castile Legions and Sicily." This appears to be one of the very early examples of the use of the queen's name from the original Greek translation. Curiously, this seal had been updated by January 20, 1479 to reflect both Ferdinand and Isabella's respective kingdoms, so it is unusual that this seal would be used after its discontinuation. The document is accompanied by a synopsis explaining the content and historic context of the pardon.

Condition: Moderate toning, soiling, and foxing. Flattened folds with small amounts of paper loss and chipping at the edges. On verso are what appear to be small strips of contemporary paper and archival tape used to repair and reinforce any weaknesses and separations.
