    Description

Katharine Lee Bates: Signed "America The Beautiful" And Signed Photograph. Katharine Lee Bates (August 12, 1859 – March 28, 1929) was a prolific American writer, college professor, scholar, and social activist. Although she published volumes of poetry, travel books, essays, children's books, and books for young adults today Bates is primarily remembered as the author of "America the Beautiful". Offered in this group is a boldly signed copy of "America The Beautiful". Bates has signed on the front page of a bifold that measures 5.25" x 6.5". Inside is the history behind her famous poem. Also included is a 6" x 8.5" SP, likely taken while at Wellesley College. She sits with her dog and has written "Hamlet and his Katharine Lee Bates". A most charming photograph of Bates and her faithful companion. A wonderful group for an American icon.
