    Description

    Julia Ward Howe Autograph Quotation Signed. One page, 7.25" x 4.75" (sight), [Massachusetts], June 11, 1895. Howe, a noted poet and civil rights activist, first wrote the poem-turned-song, The Battle Hymn of the Republic, after meeting President Abraham Lincoln in November 1861. Thirty-four years later, she again transcribed the final stanza of her poem, consisting of seven lines, reading in full:

    "In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born
    across the sea,
    With a glory in his bosom that transfigures
    you and me;
    As he died to make men holy, let us die
    to make men free,
    While God is marching on."

    Shortly after composing the poem it was placed to music, using the tune from the popular song, John Brown's Body, and was published in February 1862. It was an instant hit and has remained a popular American patriotic song to this day.

    Matted with a photograph of Howe, a biographical plate, and an engraved plate bearing a full transcription of the document and framed to an overall size of 21" x 18.75".

    Condition: One smoothed vertical fold; two small spots of foxing to the right of the fold.
