Judge Roy Bean: A Rare Early Letter Signed by the Notorious Texas Judge, with Excellent Content. This letter is dated September 9, 1882, just weeks after Bean had been appointed justice of the peace in a town named Vinegaroon. This was a tent city which sprang up in Pecos County to service some 8000 men working on railroad construction. But the nearest court was in Fort Stockton, 200 miles away, so Bean held Court in his tent saloon.Inasmuch as Bean was semi-illiterate the text of the letter is written in a clerk's hand to the judge at Fort Stockton. It reads in full:
Dear Sir:
I send you a prisoner and from all accts. Is a very bad character. He has killed one that I know of now in Vinegaroon. And a man here says that there is a Reward for him from Palestine for the killing of a man. The witness against him I have appointed as a guard who will go with the Ranger in charge of the prisoner. He is a young fellow from Dhenis of a good German family and I wish you would favor him there all you can. If he needs any bond for appearance you will please fix it for him.
Yours truly,
Roy Bean
One suspects that perhaps the prospect of the reward had made this prisoner of particular interest to Bean.
The letter is on lined paper, 7.5" x 8.75", and in excellent condition. Minor smudging of the ink on Bean's signature.Stress to the paper at the folds.
