Description

Juan José de Echeveste Autograph Letter Signed, four integral pages with writing on pages one through three, 6.25" x 8", New Orleans, March 22, 1799, in Spanish. Browning, a couple of small holes, and wear at the folds. Otherwise, near fine. A beautifully written letter by the author of the first California code, the Reglamento Provisional of 1773. Echeveste based his reglamento on the knowledge and experience gained as the purchasing agent in Mexico City for the two Californias. He provisioned and helped plan Juan Bautista de Anza's second expedition of October 1775, which took 200 colonists to northern California and founded the Mission and Presidio of San Francisco.
