Josias Clapham Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 7.5" x 5.5", n. p., September 20, 1777. In this letter addressed to General Edward Hand, the commanding officer at Fort Pitt in Western Pennsylvania, Colonel Clapham writes, "The Bearer Capt. James Rattikin marches up to Fort Pitt or elsewhere under your orders agreeable to His Excellency's request to this county. He has a company of Volunteers that will I hope do Honour to our Country." Patriot Josias Clapham was a prominent Virginia landowner and founder of Clapham's Ferry on the Potomac River at Leesburg, now a historic landmark. Ten months before receiving this letter, General Hand had crossed the Delaware River with General George Washington during the Continental Army's surprise attack against Hessian troops at Trenton, New Jersey. Minor tape repair on the verso along a fold. A small tear along the top edge resulted from the original breaking of the seal. Some stains and foxing, but the text is clear and bold.
