Description

    Joseph Lister Autograph Letter Signed. One page on imprinted stationery, 3.5" x 5.5" (sight); May 30, 1899. A brief letter to Dr. George Dean: "Haffkine has agreed to dine with me on June 10th (Satd) at 8 o'clock. Would give me much pleasure if you could join him... Lister." Waldemar Haffkine was a Jewish bacteriologist who emigrated from Russia to work at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, where he developed an anti-cholera vaccine. Lister named him "a savior of humanity" for his development and use of vaccines against cholera and bubonic plague. Matted with the original transmittal envelope and a picture of Lister to an overall size of 14" x 13.75".
    Condition: Letter is very clean, with a single horizontal mail fold. Envelope has light soiling. Both pieces are affixed to the mat with two small bits of cloth tape at top.
