    Description

Joseph J. Thomson Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages, 4.5" x 7", Cambridge, England; October 19, 1914. Addressed to an unnamed recipient, the letter was written during the early days of WWI when the Grand Fleet was first encountering German U-boats. The letter reads in full: "I quite agree with you as to the importance of finding some means of detecting the presence of submarines and I think that the most promising method is to detect the sound given out by the engines. I have some reason for thinking that this plan has already been considered by the Admiralty and it is clear that they are the people who have the best chance of getting a practical scheme. I am sure that it would be possible to devise an instrument which under the circumstances which prevail in a quiet laboratory would detect the noise of a submarine a long way off, when however you have to substitute a noisy battleship for the quiet laboratory the problem is a very different one & can best be imagined by those who can work under the conditions which occur in warfare."

Joseph John Thomson (1856-1940) was an English physicist. He discovered the first subatomic particle, the electron, in 1897 and established atomic physics as a modern science. He won the 1906 Nobel Prize in Physics for his theoretical and experimental investigations on the conduction of electricity by gases.

Condition: Smoothed folds. Lightly rubbed and toned.
