Joseph-Ignace Guillotin Freemason Document Signed "Guillotin / Presid" as lodge president. One partly-printed vellum page in French, 23.75" x 20.5", Paris, 1766. (The document is dated using the Masonic Lodge calendar system-" de l'an de la vraie lumiere Cinq mil Sept cent Soixante Six [translated: in the Year of Light 5766].") The document has the large heading, "[translated] The Glory of the Great Architect of the Universe." Guillotin has signed under the heading, "Chambre des Provinces." There are over twenty additional signatures under three headings: "Chambre des Provinces," Chambre d'Administration," and Chambre de Paris." Two unbroken red seals exist in the lower margin, strengthened with ribbon. Masonic vignettes illustrate the document. Folds with minor foxing and stains.

Joseph-Ignace Guillotin (1738-1814) was a French physician and Freemason. Though he did not invent the guillotine, he did suggest that the execution device be used for all French capital punishment. To his chagrin-he was against capital punishment-his name quickly became associated with the device. Guillotin was a founder of Le Grand Orient de France, serving as the first orator of its Chamber of the Provinces. He later became its president.
