Description

Joseph Hooker Autograph Letter Signed "Joseph Hooker, Maj. Genl". Two pages, 5.75" x 8.75", Aston House, September 3, 1865. Writing to Henry B. Dawson:

    "Dear Sir,

By a re-perusal of your letter of the 9th of August, I fear that I have inadvertently been the cause of your not calling on me in regard to the
[illegible] supposed to be in your village. If this is the case and you are awaiting a reply from me let this remove it. My first impression was that you were to see me without further correspondence. The papers to which you refer may be of very great importance to the Government & in consequence it should be the duty of every good citizen to assist in having them placed in its possession. Please assign my grateful acknowledgements for your information."

It is unknown what important documents Hooker refers to, but based on the date of the letter, it is possible that they relate to his service in Command of the military Department of the East after the war. Joseph Hooker, nicknamed "Fighting Joe", was an able, albeit unpopular Union general during the Civil War. Though he served with some distinction his legacy is tarnished - rightly or wrongly - by accusations of excessive drinking and womanizing.

Condition: Lightly toned at edges with minimal foxing, else fine.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
