    Description

Joseph E. Johnston Autograph Letter Signed "J.E. Johnston." Three pages of a bifolium, 4.5" x 7.25", Savannah, Georgia; September 11, 1872. Addressed to General Dabney H. Maury, Johnston discusses the reasons why he could not add his name in support of Maury's publication. It reads,

"...I read the first part with great pleasure, because it is, as I expected, clear and soldierly, and I know, correct. I have no doubt that the 2nd part will be equally so. But as you tell me that it is unfavorable to Genl. Lovell, I had rather not take the part of reviewer. It would be a difficult one for me, I am afraid, for Lovell and I have been intimate ever since 1847...I should love very much to do all I can to give you confidence in what you have written, but it seems to me that in this case I should appear as accepting in a statement unfavorable to a friend. And however true that statement may be, and right its publication, I ought not assist in it. So it seems to me, that is to say."

General Johnston was one of the highest-ranking U.S. Army generals who resigned his commission and joined the Confederate Army. His defense of General Mansfield Lovell was over the fall of New Orleans to the U.S. Navy in 1862. Many in the military and Confederate government blamed Lovell for the failure to defend the city. Although he was later cleared of incompetence charges, his reputation as a military leader was forever damaged.

Condition: Usual mail folds, small areas of soiling or foxing, with some small pencil notations in places. Overall very fine.
