José Joaquín de Herrera Letter Signed. One page of a bifolium, 8" x 11.5". Mexico, September 22, 1829. In Spanish on Ministry of Justice and Ecclesiastical Affairs imprinted letterhead sending notice that the Spanish forces have been defeated and asking how to most solemnly honor God and the military forces for their protection. Signed "Herrera", adding a simple paraph beneath. Although Mexico had achieved its independence from Spain in 1821, Spain would make attempts to reconquer their lost colony. Santa Anna's victory at Tampico on September 11, 1829 would end Spain's campaigns.Herrera was politically moderate, and began his career in the military. He would later serve as president of Mexico on three separate occasions: in September 1844; December 1844 to December 1845; and June 1848 to January 1851.
Condition: Near fine, with bold in on gently toned paper. Flattened folds, and a previous dealer's pencil annotation on the front.
