John Witherspoon and Richard Stockton Document Signed. Partly printed diploma in Latin, vellum, 10" x 8", October 4, 1774. This degree from the College of New Jersey - later Princeton University in 1896 - was conferred upon John N. Cumming and signed by head professor and university president John Witherspoon (a Signer of the Declaration of Independence), and professors Jeremy Halsey, John Rodgers, Alex Macwhorter, Robert Harris, Richard Stockton (also a Declaration of Independence Signer), and William Shippen. This rare document, with its edges mounted to a paper matte, includes the seal of the College of New Jersey at bottom right and seven 2.25" horizontal cuts in the center (presumably to hold a now-missing ribbon). It is in good condition, trimmed slightly at the top; the signatures have faded to brown. From the collection of Henry E. Luhrs.
