John Wesley Hardin: A Rare Autograph on a Page from a Texas Brand Book. Also signed numerous times by Mannen Clements, an older cousin of Hardin who was a lesser-known desperado who once helped Hardin escape from jail. Also present are signatures of J. H. Clemens, a relative who was in the cattle business with Mannen, as well as famed Texas Ranger John Tomlinson. According to one report, Clements was himself sprung from jail by no less than Wild Bill Hickok, when sheriff of Abilene, Texas. Hickok and Harding had developed a camaraderie of sorts, and Hardin would later claim that Wild Bill, as a favor to him, had arranged the escape of Clements, who was charged with killing two cowhands.

Hardin began a lengthy prison sentence in 1877 (during which time he studied law and prepared for his new profession), and Mannen Clements was killed during his imprisonment. Accordingly, this page must date from prior to 1877, making it one of the earliest and rarest known Hardin autographs. The page measures 7.75" x 11.5", and despite some moderate aging, as shown, it is in very good overall condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
