    Description

John Wesley Hardin: A Classic Form of His Sought-After Signature. Hardin was killed on August 19, 1895, in another of his favorite haunts, the Acme Saloon. Hardin had a heated dispute with an El Paso lawman, John Selman, Jr. Subsequently he was confronted by John Selman, Sr., himself a constable. It was an unpleasant exchange, and that night Selman, Sr. stepped into the saloon where Hardin was shooting dice, walked up to him, and coolly shot him in the back of the head. Once Hardin hit the floor, Selman fired two more shots into him just to be safe. Selman was indicted for murder, but the trial ended in a hung jury. He was out on bail awaiting retrial when he was killed by U.S. Marshal George Scarborough following a dispute over a card game. Scarborough, too, was acquitted.

Hardin spent a lot of time in El Paso saloons, and often signed his bar tabs, such as this one from the Wigwam dated May 13th, 1895. In the case of the Wigwam, Hardin had reached an agreement in principle to purchase a half-interest in the establishment, so the tabs were accumulated on a spindle with no thought to their future redemption. This example is in fine condition with a clean, black ink signature measuring approximately 3.5" x 1.75".

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
