John Tyler Letter Signed "J. Tyler" as president. One page of a bifolium, 8" x 10", n.p., "Tuesday," circa May 25, 1841, to "Hon. Mr. [George] Badger / Secretary of the Navy." Tyler has free franked the letter on the address panel, "The President." Only weeks after taking office, Lloyd I. Bryan met with President Tyler about his removal from service (likely military service). Tyler transmits with this letter another (not included in this lot) containing the "verbal representation" of Mr. Bryan, who, Tyler suggests, "would seem to have been badly treated." The president, however, refuses to take sides, choosing instead to rely on the record, which "will best speak for itself." The text of the letter is clean. Tyler's signature exhibits very minor smearing. Darker toning occurs around the left edge.

President Tyler writes in full: "Your attention is invited to the enclosed letter. from the verbal representation which is made to me Mr. Bryan would seem to have been badly treated. The record will best speak for itself. Truly Yrs. [signed] J. Tyler."

Several dockets exist on the address panel: "Lloyd I. Bryan for restoration to the Service." Following this in pencil, "Return with the Records of the Courts M. in Mr. Bryan's case." Next, in ink appears, "25 May 1841 / Testimonials withdrawn by Mr. Bryan." Then, "Mr. Bryan decries to be restored to the Service." In pencil, "Record herewith File." And finally, "P126 Apl 27 Smith."

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
