John Tyler Autograph Letter Signed Twice, once as the closing of the letter ("J. Tyler") and once as a free frank ("J. Tyler"). One and three-quarters pages, 8" x 10", Sherwood Forest [Virginia], October 27, 1848, addressed to his son, Robert Tyler of Philadelphia. Three years after leaving office, Tyler writes about the upcoming presidential election, an apologetic letter from James Buchanan, and the Free Soil Party. In part:

"If Pennsylvania and Ohio go for [Zachary] Taylor he is elected beyond a doubt - but notwithstanding your confident prediction of the vote of Pennsylvania, you may be disappointed if the barnburners adhere to [Martin] Van Buren, and if they voted for Johnson in the late election - I feel confident that all depends on that. . . . [Buchanan was] expressive of great regret that any indignity should have been offered me from his office. . . . I have declined in a written response - giving a shot at Van Buren and defined my position on the Free Soil question - I hope that my letter may be published."

Zachary Taylor did win the election of 1848, thanks to help from Van Buren, a Free Soil candidate, whose campaign split the Democratic votes. The letter contains a small amount of paper-loss, due to the original unsealing, on the address leaf in a blank area. Minor holes at some fold intersections.
