John Tyler Autograph Letter Signed "John Tyler." A letter written and signed by John Tyler, one page, 7.6" x 9.9", Gloucester County, Virginia, August 20, 1836. The content is of incredible interest, as it has to do with the issue of slavery. It reads, "My Dear Sir; Will you do me the favor with as little delay as possible to have copied and forward me, the resolutions offered by myself to the Senate last winter, on the subject of abolishing slavery in the District- A loose sheet of journal would be better than a copy. Your compliance will much oblige."

Tyler is writing to Mr. Walter Lowrie Esquire, Secretary of the Senate. This letter was written before Tyler assumed the Vice Presidency and Presidency. Before his role in these two positions Tyler served as a United States Senator for the state of Virginia. Tyler was pro-slavery throughout his political career, and often opposed motions to abolish it in certain districts of the United States.

"His Accidency" as political opponents called him was one of the first presidents to go against his party's ideas and make decisions based on his own logic and merit. For this he earns the distinction of being the only president to leave office "without a party." He even named his home Sherwood Forest, considering himself somewhat of a political outlaw!

The letter is in fine condition, with small areas of ink smudging in the body of the letter, dark smoke stains on the upper edge, and the expected fold lines. The letter comes complete with a typed transcript of the document. Now your collection can be complete with "Tyler too!" From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
