John Tyler Autograph Letter Signed as President. One page of a bifolium, 8" x 10", Washington; July 1, 1842. Written a month before the passage of the controversial Tariff of 1842, also known as the Black Tariff, the letter is addressed to an unknown recipient, and titled Confidential. In it, Tyler writes that the time has come to approach Mr. Curtis, presumably Edward Curtis, the Collector of the Port of New York. The letter illustrates the contentious relationship between the President and prominent members in the Whig party, including Representative Botts who introduced an impeachment resolution against the President nine days after this letter was written. It reads in full:

"Has not the time now arrived for a decisive movement in the Custom House. Mr. Curtis is surrounded by members who I doubt not would, were they at liberty, bestow upon me similar epithets as those contained in the likes of those most notable and refined gentlemen Botts, Stanley, and Arnold. To retain them longer in office is insufferable. Do take friends by the hands, equally from the two parties as heretofore organized. A move now in favor of friends from the Democratic ranks will be decisive. Such is my opinion. Please inform me of the difficulties in the way if any. I think that free consultation among our friends in the City should be had and matters regulated accordingly. I cannot get on as things now are since the whole efforts of the Whigs here are to war upon me, and embarrass me. Do see Mr. Curtis and have a free conversation. After hearing from you I may write to him." Signed, "John Tyler." Tyler signed the Tariff of 1842 on August 30th, but it proved to be a disaster for international trade and was repealed four years later.
