Description

    John Sullivan Autograph Letter Signed "Jno Sullivan" as president (governor) of New Hampshire. One page with integral address leaf, 5.75" x 7.25", Durham [New Hampshire], April 10, 1787. Writing "Brigadier General Dowe," Sullivan informs him that "The Council is to meet on Monday the 29th Day of May . . . to Count the votes & to [illegible] other matters of importance your attendance is expected." Smoothed folds. Small tear along the upper horizontal fold, but not affecting the text. Overall toning. Remnant of wax seal on the address leaf.

    John Sullivan (1740-1795) first served the cause of the American Revolution as a delegate to the First and Second Continental Congresses and later as a major general in the Continental Army, seeing action at the Battles of Long Island, Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine, and Rhode Island. In 1779, he led the Sullivan Expedition against the Iroquois in western New York and retired from the army shortly after. In 1780 he returned to the Continental Congress, but resigned the following year.
