John Steinbeck Autograph Manuscript Unsigned. Three pages, 8" x 12.5", No place; no date. An unusual manuscript from the American author, which seemingly outlines various warfare tactics to be used, possibly during the unrest in Cuba. He lists ten ideas, which read as follows:"1. Small but powerful explosives, easy to detonate. These perhaps should have the shape and appearance of cigars. The sugar mills are the objective and specifically the grinding machinery and the bailers where the juice is evaporated, the crystalizing pans and the refining centrifugals. The advantage of the cigar shape is that soon all cigars would be suspect.
2. Plant killers - powerful acids like weed killers. These in ampules. These should not kill the ground but only small areas of cane. Not much cane would have to be destroyed. Once established all plant failures would be [illegible] to poison.
3. Harmless dyes like methylin blue for coloring settling ponds and bailing syrups. This could be in water soluble capsules. Any extraordinary manifestation cause apprehension and the color blue is particularly feared.
4. High altitude balloons bearing aluminum nets. These make a pretty show on radar screens. They would establish the marksmanship of the A.A. Also being meaningless, they could cause some pains since people fear what they do not understand.
5. Money - small hills, well made and aged, perhaps in a rotary cylinder with soiled clothes. These should be scattered at random, and in quantity to be picked up.
6. A paper underground to which radio orders should be issued, particularly about those things which are going to happen anyway. Broad east should be at sea.
7. Since this is a one crop economy, any interferences with it is deadly. The sugar mills are prime targets not so much for actual destruction but for causing suspicion and for increasing armed guards. The principle should be to sow suspicion so that workers will be reluctant to work either in the fields or in the mills.
8. Flares - sodium perhaps are very effective particularly if they have no meaning. These can either be dropped (parachuted) balloon carried or sailed toward the coast in very small unmanned craft, the flares to be set off by the time clock. If the supporting craft could be such when the flare is exhausted, it would be even better. This sort of manifestation can cause anxiety and can mask other operations in other areas.
9. Information should be leaked that money and valuables are being deposited in Geneva in anonymous accounts.
10. Don't forget standard small arms cartridges load with dynamite and left about for finding. Properly handled this could make the militia afraid to fire their weapons (see use of this method in the Mexican troubles of 1910.)
Condition: Flattened folds with an uneven top edge. Minor dampstaining on the first page at the lower left. Else very good.
