    Description

John Steinbeck Autograph Letter Signed Group. This lot features three letters measuring 3.5" x 5.5", signed "John Steinbeck" , all addressed to Paul Jordan Smith. Smith was a novelist and scholar who was responsible for the "Disumbrationist" school of art hoax in the 1920s. He was an early admirer of Steinbeck's work and Steinbeck sent him many letters. This auction features several of them in addition to this lot. The letters in this lot are dated: January 19, 1937; April 17, 1939; and May 16, 1939. The 1937 letter contains content about "Of Mice and Men" and "St. Katy the Virgin." It reads in part, "St. Katy was written some time ago and has probably more rejection slips than any pig in the world." Interestingly enough, we are offering a signed first edition of this very book in this sale. It is one of Steinbeck's more peculiar works, but in this cataloguer's opinion is absolutely fascinating and brilliant.
The letters are all in fine condition with no major flaws. The 1937 letter has some small areas of foxing on the address side. Otherwise, a fine lot! Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
