John Steinbeck Autograph Letter Draft Unsigned with Related Letters. One page, 7.75" x 12.5", no place; "sent 12/27/63." A reference letter drafted by Steinbeck, written for Michael Terrence McNally, a candidate for the Guggenheim Fellowship. It reads in full:"I know Michael Terrence McNally very well indeed. For ten months in 1961-62 he travelled with my family as tutor to my two sons. From this I was made aware not only of his education and erudition, but also his patience, hard work and will power which was made evident through the effect he had on two teenage boys. During this time, he also continued with his own work in playwriting, although where he found the time I do not know. I have read some of Mr. McNally's work which I find excellent and provocative. His energy is enormous and is matched by his curiosity. I find I am not alone in my anticipation of important work from him in the field of the theatre. The response to his first work by competent people has been enthusiastic. All in all I can't think of anyone I have met in recent years whom I could more enthusiastically recommend for a Guggenheim Fellowship."
The letter is accompanied by a small group of correspondences between Steinbeck's secretary, Janet Beckman, and Gordon N. Ray of the Guggenheim Foundation. There is also a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation (1964) Fellowship pamphlet.
Condition: Varying degrees of toning, creasing, chipping, and soiling throughout all pages. Pages are held together with a small staple.
