John S. Mosby Autograph Letter Signed "Jno. S. Mosby." Two pages, 5.5" x 9.5", on Mosby Drug Co. letterhead, Bedford City [Virginia], June 1, 1906. Former Confederate General Mosby writes to close friend Sam Chapman regarding a fellow Confederate officer who has apparently predicted his own death, to Mosby's amusement, in part:

"Have you read Col. Tom Smith's dirge . . . it is the song of the dying swan. Observe that in the last sentence he bids eternal farewell to 'ladies & comrades.' Says it is the last reunion he will attend 'for ere another' he will have gone to the forever that has taken its flight to greet the warriors souls'. In other words that before another decoration day - May 30th 1907 - he will be in Heaven - or somewhere else."

Areas of ink smudging from what appear to be water drops. Small tear at the upper left corner of page one. Toned around the edges.

According to records, Col. Smith lived for many more years, dying two years after Mosby himself. In a twist of irony, Smith died on Decoration Day, May 30, 1918.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
