    Description

John S. Mosby Autograph Letter Signed "Jno. S. Mosby." One page, 5.75" x 6.5", Washington, March 24, 1911, to former Union soldier Ralph B. Briggs declining an invitation to dinner in Ulysses S. Grant's memory. He writes, in part: "I suppose the dinner will be given to celebrate the anniversary of Grant's birthday. It [would] give me great pleasure to be with you on the occasion & it is with great regret that I have to decline as I expect to be away in Virginia at that time. I had a warm affection for General Grant when he was living & shall always cherish his memory because he was my best friend." Lightly soiled at the upper left corner and light wrinkling along the left margin. Text is bold and very bright.

Confederate Colonel John Mosby, the famous 'Gray Ghost' and commander of Mosby's Rangers, earned his nickname for his uncanny ability to elude capture and go undetected by Union forces. His capture of General Stoughton behind Union lines was a feat of legendary proportion. According to legend, Mosby found Stoughton in bed; upon waking, the general demanded, "Do you know who I am?" To which Mosby replied, "Do you know Mosby, general?" "Yes! Have you got the rascal?" "No, but he has got you!" Mosby's troops were an effective force against the Union cavalry; they had great success in destroying Union communications and appropriating supplies. He evaded capture and remained active until the end of the war. He was a controversial postbellum Southern figure due to his associations with Northerners, as illustrated by this letter.
