John S. Mosby Autograph Letter Signed "Jno. S. Mosby/ Colonel of Partisan Rangers." One page of a lined bifolium, 7.5" x 9.5", n.p., May 3, 1865. Confederate Colonel Mosby writes to Charles L. Hall, a sergeant in Company C, Mosby's Regiment, Virginia Cavalry and a valued comrade at arms. It reads, in full:

"The fortunes of war having dissolved the relations so long existing between us, I would omit the performance of a duty should I fail to acknowledge the signal services you have rendered to the cause of the country & to myself as commander. From the time of your first connection with the command to the hour of its disbandment, you participated in nearly all of its most important achievements, and your intelligence & courage largely contributed to our success. It was my intention to have filled the vacancy in your company by your promotion as Captain, when the news of the surrender of the Confederate Armies rendered it impracticable. It adds much to my regret at parting that you did not receive the reward due to distinguished talent & services. Very Respectfully. Your friend."

Mosby earned his nickname "The Gray Ghost" for his uncanny ability to elude capture and go undetected by Union forces. Mosby's troops were an effective force against the Union cavalry; they had great success in destroying Union communications and appropriating supplies. He would evade capture and remained active until the end of the war. Included with the letter is a period envelope with a handwritten "Mosby's Letter" on the front as well as a carte de visite, possibly of the recipient, Charles Hall.

Condition: Letter exhibits light weakness at intersecting folds and a few ink smudges.
