John Quincy Adams Writ Engrossed Entirely in His Hand and Signed on the Verso. Partly printed sheet, 8" x 6.75", with a second sheet affixed at bottom, 7.75" x 5.5". Suffolk County, Massachusetts. The initial writ is dated March 28, 1793, and filed the next month in April. The addendum is undated, and is affixed with wax in two spots. Adams is acting as attorney for the plaintiff, James Barry, in a case involving one hundred quarter casks of sherry wine. Adams outlines how the defendant, William Foster, came to take possession of the barrels, and seeks reimbursement of 1500 Pounds on behalf of his client. Adams dockets and signs, "John Q. Adams", on the back.

Adams was admitted to the bar in 1790, and practiced law for only four years. He struggled to find clients, but this was mainly because his interests lay in politics. During these same years he authored many important political articles. Adams was appointed Ambassador to the Netherlands by President Washington in 1794, a year after the date of the document offered here.

Condition: Uneven toning, a bit darker at edges and folds. Partial separations at folds, with two archival tape repairs on verso along vertical folds. Pencil annotation in left margin on recto.
