John Quincy Adams Autograph Letter Signed "J. Q. Adams." One page, 7.5" x 9.5", Washington, January 30, 1831, to Alexander McClelland and John DeWitt declining an invitation " deliver the anniversary Oration before the two Societies in your Institution [Rutgers University]." He writes: "Deeming myself honoured by the appointment, it would have given me great pleasure to comply with the invitation, and to perform the duty which it imports. Circumstances connected with the State of my Affairs, and Considerations of a private nature forbid me the indulgence of an expectation that it will be in my power and deny me the gratification with which I should also have availed myself of the request of the Society to address my youthful friends and Countrymen..." Smoothed folds and uneven toning. Chip along the upper edge; tear at left has been archivally repaired, but does not affect the legibility of the text. Some ink bleed through from the verso along the upper edge.

Having left the presidency nearly two years before, Adams kept himself busy. Adams was about to begin his first term (of nine) as a United States representative for Massachusetts, a post he would hold until his death in 1848.
