John Quincy Adams Autograph Letter Signed "J. Q. Adams." One page, 8" x 9.75", Quincy [Massachusetts], October 29, 1840, to Benjamin A. Gould proposing a suitable date to give a lecture. In full:

"I had an engagement here on yesterday, the last Wednesday of this month which was yesterday, and have one at Salem on next Wednesday, in the first Week of November. If Thursday the 5th or Friday the 6th of next week would suit the managers of the Society for the diffusion of useful knowledge it will give me pleasure to deliver a lecture before them. They are the only days at my disposal, before my proposed departure for Washington."

The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge was established in London in 1826 with the purpose of dispensing scientific knowledge to a public who was increasingly more literate. An American branch was founded around the same time and was most active in Boston until 1947. Moderately toned around the edges; usual folds. Very fine.
