A 1776 appointment "for the Defence of American Liberty"

John Morton Partly Printed Document Signed as Speaker of the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly. One page, 12.75" x 8.25", Pennsylvania, July 13, 1776. Boldly headed "In Assembly", a Committee of Safety military appointment issued to Philip Waggoner as a "second Lieutenant of a company of Troops in the fourth Battalion of Associators in the city and liberties of Philadelphia - for the Protection of this Province against all hostile Enterprizes, and for the Defence of American Liberty." The document offered here is moderately and unevenly age toned, with dampstains and weakened/partially separated folds. Printed "Liberty Safety & Peace" seal at upper left. Morton's signature is boldly penned at lower right.

American patriot John Morton was a delegate to the Continental Congress, signed the Declaration of Independence, and served as chairman of the committee that wrote the Articles of Confederation. In June 1776, a resolution proclaiming American independence from Britain was the primary topic of discussion in Congress. The delegation from Pennsylvania was evenly split on the matter, with Morton remaining uncommitted until July 1, when he cast the deciding vote to allow Pennsylvania's vote for independence. Morton was the first signer of the Declaration to die, passing away on April 1, 1777. For this reason, war dated documents signed by Morton are rare, especially so for the year 1776.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
