John Hancock Pay Warrant Signed as Governor of Massachusetts. One page, 7.25" x 8.5", Boston, June 1, 1791, to Alexander Hodgdon as Treasurer whereby he is "ordered and directed to pay unto Daniel Smith the Sum of Fourteen Shillings & ten pence in full for the bounty on...Hemp raised, manufactured & certified agreeable to Law - to be paid as directed by resolve of 11 March last for which this shall be your sufficient Warrant." It is noted on the verso that Samuel Jenison "Recd payment in full" on November 30, 1791. Dampstaining at the bottom corner touches most of Hancock's last name, but aside from slight fading of the ink, the bold, familiar signature and paraph is mostly unaffected. Toning and one central, vertical fold. Wrinkling at top left where seal was attached.

Accompanying the warrant is a pay voucher,7.75" x 3.25", written by Daniel Smith to "Exander [Alexander] Hodgdon" to "to pay Sam Jenison my Bounty for my hemp in so doing you will oblige your Humble Servant." One the verso Jenison has signed a statement reading: "Nov 30. 1791 Recd. fourteen shillings & ten pence for the within order."

In 1791, Hancock was serving for a second, nonconsecutive time as governor of Massachusetts. His health deteriorating, he died less than two years later at the age of 56.
