    John Hancock appoints a captain in the Continental Army in 1776

    John Hancock Military Appointment as President of the Continental Congress Signed in 1776. Partly printed document, 11.5" x 8.5", n.p., August 26, 1776. Countersigned by Charles Thomson, Jr., appointing "Samuel Phillips junior. Gentleman... to be Captain of the Sixth Company in the First Regiment of the Brigade raised by the state of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, which hath been taken into Continental Pay, and is now Part of the Army of the United Colonies..." Docket on the verso, with an added notation that reads: "Preserve these commissions." Document has been silked on verso, with additional reinforcement to the folds. Tightly trimmed at top, just touching the top line of text: "In Congress".
