John Hancock Document Signed as president of the Continental Congress. The signature has been removed from the document and affixed to a larger piece of paper. Hancock's very bold signature has produced some inkburn at the "H". To the right of the signature is printed "President." Below that is written "1777," not contemporary to the document. Some light dampstaining. 6.25" x 1.5".

The document is a partially-printed 1777 military appointment appointing Jonathan Allen "Captain in the Regiment of . . . [illegible] whereof Rufus Putnam Esq. is Colonel." Aside from the signature, other pieces have separated. The lower left of the document, as well as another piece that was originally above the signature, have separated, though they are included. The only missing piece was near the center of the lower margin, measuring roughly 1.5" x 1.5". The rest of the document (roughly three-fourths of the total) is intact, affixed to a slightly larger sheet, and measures 13" x 6.75".

On the verso of that backing is affixed an Elbridge Gerry Printed Document Signed "E. Gerry" as governor of Massachusetts. One page, 9.75" x 15", Boston, February 21, 1812. The right half of the document has completely detached, but is included. A small image of Gerry has been affixed below the signature.

These two documents were part of the collection of Miss Abby L. Davis, ca. 1850. Our current auction offers many lots from Miss Davis's collection.
