John F. Kennedy Typed Letter Signed. One page on United States Senate letterhead, 8" x 10.5", June 4, 1954. Kennedy replies to a constituent's concerns about militarizing Arab nations. In part, "Because of my belief that the maintenance of peace and stability in the Middle East is of the utmost importance to the establishment of a free and peaceful world, I have written to the Secretary of State several times urging that adequate safeguards be taken to assure that any arms supplied to Arab nations such as Iraq will be used for the internal security and defense requirements of those nations and not for aggression. Moreover, a more satisfactory solution to these problems in the United Nations must be developed, despite the constant handicap of the Soviet vetoes." Signed "John Kennedy".

Following World War II, the United States sought to broker deals with Middle Eastern nations in an attempt to encourage cooperation with the West. The premise was that economic and military aid would yield strong alliances, providing access to valuable resources such as oil, and deter attacks from Russia. These plans yielded poor results, and actually fueled more tension in the region.

Condition: Usual mail folds with light toning at edges. Slight creasing, soiling spots at bottom corner. Boldly signed by Kennedy and overall very fine.
