John F. Kennedy Typed Letter Signed as Massachusetts senator. One page with integral blank, 6.25" x 8.25", on United States Senate letterhead, Washington, January 7, 1955, to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Oliver. Having free time on his hands while recovering from surgery, he wrote a letter of "thank you" to his friends, in full: "Many, many thanks for your very kind message to me when I was in the hospital in New York. Hospitals are gloomy places, I am afraid; and it makes a tremendous difference when friends remember you as you did. I am feeling much better and am looking forward to getting back to Washington around the first of March. Perhaps then I will have a chance to thank you again in person. Until then, Jackie and I want to wish you and all your family a very happy and successful New Year."

Kennedy suffered with back pain for most of his life, often forcing him to wear a back brace and use crutches. In 1954, he underwent a risky surgery in New York to repair the fifth lumbar vertebrae which had collapsed. Kennedy had Addison's disease, a disorder that suppresses the production of certain hormones in the adrenal glands. Undergoing hormone treatments for the disease had compromised his immune system, making such an invasive surgery life-threatening, but he proceeded regardless. The operation was a failure and, at one point, he was so close to death that the last rites were administered. He recovered, but remained in the hospital for nine months with a urinary tract infection. He left the hospital in December 1954 and was flown to Palm Beach, Florida, to begin the long process of recovery.
