President Kennedy sends a thank you letter for a letter of condolence upon the death of his newborn son Patrick

John F. Kennedy Typed Letter Signed as president with holograph notation. One page, on pale green White House letterhead, 6.75" x 8.75", Washington, D.C., August 15, 1963. Addressed to Senator Frank Church, the letter reads in full: "Mrs. Kennedy and I were deeply moved by your thoughtful remembrance on the loss of our son. This kind expression of sympathy on the part of you and Mrs. Church meant a great deal to us."

The Kennedy family has suffered a series of tragedies involving family members. John and Jacqueline Kennedy lost two infant children: Arabella, who was stillborn (b. August 23, 1956), and Patrick (b. August 7, 1963), who was born six weeks premature and died two days after birth from respiratory distress. Following Patrick's death, the president sent his personal thanks in response to Church's letter of condolence, adding a brief holograph notation which reads "Many thanks for your letter." Three months later, President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas; this time, a tragedy not just for the family but for the entire nation.

Senator Frank Church (1927-1984) served as a U.S. senator from Idaho from 1957 through 1981. Shortly after graduating from Stanford Law School, the thirty-two-year-old Church became the fifth youngest person to be elected as a U.S. senator. During his lengthy senate career, he was known for his opposition to the Vietnam War, chairmanship of the Church Committee, and environmentalism. He was a presidential candidate in 1976, but left the race to support Jimmy Carter, who added the senator to his short list of possible vice presidential candidates. Letter is accompanied by the original envelope. Faint soiling at lower left corner.
