Description

John D. Rockefeller Typed Contract Signed. Two pages, 8" x 13", New York, February 16, 1899. This indenture binds the sale of a parcel of land in Midland, Michigan, between Standard Oil of Ohio and Standard Oil of Indiana for $100. On the second page, Rockefeller signs as president of Standard Oil. Countersigned by witnesses O. F. Taggart, W. R. Squire, and an illegible signature. In 1870, American industrialist John D. Rockefeller (1839-1937) organized Standard Oil Company, which soon became a monopoly in the oil industry. Standard Oil Trust formed in 1882 but was forced to dissolve in the 1890s under the Sherman Antitrust Act. A blind embossed seal of Standard Oil appears on page two, above the notary public's signature.

Also included are the following: a photograph of Rockefeller bearing a stamp on the verso reading, "Newark Sunday Call [newspaper] / Date of Issue Dec. 18"; a Standard Oil partly-printed invoice dated January 18, 1890, from Toledo, Ohio; a typed letter signed by a Standard Oil manager on stationery, dated October 13, 1898, from Sioux City, Iowa; a typed letter signed by a Standard Oil "Special Agent" on stationery dated June 14, 1907, from Birmingham; an unused "Rockefeller Boulevard" postcard; and a Time magazine dated May 21, 1928, featuring John Rockefeller on the cover.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
