Early Standard Oil stock certificateJohn D. Rockefeller Standard Oil Company Stock Signed. One page, 15.5" x 6.5", New York, April 7, 1875. Certificate with original receipt attached, issuing 250 shares to Josiah Macy, Jr. Boldly signed by John D. Rockefeller as president, countersigned by Henry M. Flagler as secretary. Engraved in black ink, intricate borders and corner decorations of this handsome issue are offset by a large vignette of the Washington Capitol building at upper center and a patriotic vignette of a woman brandishing a sword and a large American flag at lower left. Verso is equally attractive with a completed section entitled "For Value Received."
John D. Rockefeller (1839-1937) was an American industrialist who organized Standard Oil Co. in 1870, gained a monopoly in the oil business and organized the Standard Oil Trust in 1882. It was dissolved by court decree in 1892. Josiah W. Macy Jr. was a prominent philanthropist and sea captain. The Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation was created in 1930 by his daughter, Kate.
Condition: Flattened folds, small amounts of paper loss along left margin of receipt occurring when it was removed from binding. Holographic cancellation across center; bot signatures have been struck through in the same red ink.
