DescriptionJohn D. Imboden Autograph Letter Signed Regarding the Advance of General Milroy. Three pages of a bifolium, 5.75" x 8.5", Camp Washington; November 19, 1862. Addressed to Col. Henry B. Davidson while Imboden was a colonel with the 1st Virginia Partisan Rangers, later known as the 62nd Virginia Mounted Infantry. In this letter Imboden discusses the advance of General Milroy, his fear that an engagement was imminent and his request for reinforcements. It reads in part: "Citizens of respectably and intelligence who are flying from Highland, all concur in the statement that Milroy is advancing in considerable force. One of my own men who lay concealed within 40 yards of the road...two or three days ago counted his infantry as well as the could & made note the number about 3600. This I take to be about Milroy's strength. Whilst as a general thing I do no attach much importance to reports of frightened citizens, I am convinced from the various success of information reaching me...that the enemy is now within twenty of miles of me. That he will advance further today & attack me in a day or two. I have little doubt, unless deterred by a show of force at this place...Acting upon the information I have I deem it prudent to ask you to send me every man you can at once – and follow them up with any additional forced you can tomorrow & next day..." Signed, "J. D. Imboden." From the Military Archive of CSA General Henry B. Davidson.
