Description
John C. Hays Treasury Warrant Signed. 6.25" x 3.5", Washington, [Texas]; October 31, 1844. A warrant issued to the order of John C. Hays, for the amount of $200 in payment for his service in "Protection of the South Western Frontier." Cancelled perpendicularly across the front, "Paid"; and endorsed on the verso "John C. Hays."In 1844, Texas was seeing increases in attacks from the Comanche tribe and threats of invasion from Mexico continued. On February 1, 1844, Texas lawmakers authorized Hays to raise a company Texas Rangers to patrol and defend the western and southern borders. The warrant offered here is payment to Hays for that service. Samuel Walker, who had returned to Texas a few months earlier, joined Hays' Ranger Company in February 1844.
Condition: Very fine condition, small area of dampstaining at top corner on verso. Does not affect Hays' endorsement.
