John C. Hays Treasury Warrant Signed. 6.75" x 3.75", Washington, [Texas]; December 19, 1843. A pay warrant issued to "John C. Hays Captn. Spies Company " in the amount of $1000 for "Relief of Capt. John C. Hays & Company this amount being Drawn on an estimate the Auditor will charge accordingly." Holographically cancelled, "Paid" and endorsed on the verso, "John C. Hays."

Hays served as Captain of a Texas Ranger Company of Spies in Bexar County from January to October 1841 and again in February to November of 1843. Hays and his Company patrolled the counties of Bexar, Refugio, Robertson, Travis, Milam, and Goliad Counties. Tensions had arisen along the Mexico/Texas border, and Hays and his men were tasked with securing the area from bandits and possible invasion. Hays had somewhere between 15-36 rangers in his company.

A joint resolution was approved on December 19, 1843 to appropriate $6,450 for the payment and support of Hays and his men "while employed in the protection of the South-Western frontier, during the year one thousand eight hundred and forty-three" (Laws of the Republic of Texas). The warrant offered here is a partial payment of that sum.

Condition: Very fine condition, small amounts of soiling on verso, not affecting Hays' endorsement signature.
