John Butler Two Documents Signed. One, dated 1770, is addressed to Major Jellis Fonda and concerns the purchase of "a gallon of your wine". The second is a court document signed "John Butler Judge". Both are toned with light stains; very good.

    More Information:

    (1) Document Signed. One page, 7.5" x 4.25", April 6, 1770, n.p., to Major Jellis Fonda. In part: " . . . having nothing to give him to bring should be glad you send me a gallon of your wine if you have it to spare & charge it to the account of your humble servant John Butler". Major Fonda (1727-1791) a veteran of the French and Indian War, was a wealthy landowner and trader who later became a county judge. The Fonda family (which includes modern well-known members Henry, Peter, and Jane) arrived in New York in 1650 from the Netherlands.

    (2) Document Signed "John Butler Judge". One page, 7.5" x 7", June 16, 1774, Tryon County, New York. This court document concerns the bail of Johannis Caslier.

French and Indian War veteran John Butler (1728-1796) remained a loyalist during the American Revolution. In May 1775, he left New York to fight the rebels in Canada. While there, he raised the loyalist regiment called Butler's Rangers, which included former slaves. After the war, Butler remained in Canada.

Included in this lot is an image of John Butler. On the verso is a note identifying the piece as being owned by Howard. L. Osgood, a prominent Rochester, New York, attorney and collector of New York historical manuscripts.
