John Brown Autograph Letter Signed and Carte de Visite. The letter, one page, 7.75" x 4.75", Boston, May 13, 1859. Brown was in the Northeast drumming up support for his cause when he sent this letter home, addressed to his wife and children, in full as written: "I wrote you from Troy last week; saying I had send on the balance of articles I intended to buy: & that it might be well to call on Jas A. Allen Westfort for them soon. I would now say that if you are not in a straight for them: it may be as well to defer sending a little: as I expect soon to be at home again & may in that case be able to save considerable expence. They are all direct to John Brown at Westport. I feel now very confident of ultimate success; but have to be patient: & have had the Ague to hinder me some lately. May God be the portion of you All." Smoothed folds. Areas of light staining at the lower edge and near the right edge. Mounting remnants at the upper corners of the verso.

With the letter is a 2.5" x 4" carte de visite of Brown in a painted portrait by J.W. Dodge from a photograph taken of him in 1859. Brown is seen from the hips up with his hands in his trouser pockets, turned to his left and looking at the camera. Below the image is a facsimile signature and the slogan "His Soul is Marching On." Dodge published his image in 1865. The edges of the mount have been trimmed and the corners clipped. Small foxing spots can be seen, else fine.

Four days before writing this letter, Brown delivered a lecture in Concord. The event was attended by Amos Bronson Alcott, an abolitionist and father of author Louisa May Alcott; poet and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson; and abolitionist and author Henry David Thoreau. Five months later he made his infamous raid on the Federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. For this act he was hanged on December 2, 1859.
