    John Basilone, Medal of Honor Recipient, Inscribed and Signed Magazine Cover. Placed near the upper left corner of the cover of the June 24, 1944, issue of Collier's magazine, eighty-two pages and measuring 10.75" x 13.75", Gunnery Sergeant Basilone has inscribed "with Luck / Gy Sgt John Basilone / U.S.M.C." Basilone is featured on the cover in a war bonds advertisement, holding an M1917 Browning machine gun with ammunition belts draped around his neck.

    John Basilone (1916-1945) enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1934, completing his first three years in the Philippines, before re-enlisting. In July 1940, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and was first sent to Cuba before being reassigned to Guadalcanal. On October 24, 1942, his fifteen man unit came under attack by nearly 3,000 Japanese soldiers at the Battle for Henderson Field. Twelve men in his unit were killed and Basilone held off the Japanese advance for two days using two machine guns. For his actions he was awarded the Medal of Honor. Having returned home, he participated in a war bonds tour. He returned to duty in the Pacific and was killed by shrapnel during the invasion of Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945. For his actions on Iwo Jima he was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross.

    With the March 17, 1945, issue of the Marine Corps Chevron, measuring an 11.5" x 16.5" and containing an article on the death of Basilone and an 8.5" x 12" page removed from a magazine honoring those who died on Iwo Jima and profiling Basilone.

    Condition: All of the items in this collection are fragile. The signed magazine is fragile with chipping at the right edge and damp staining near the lower left corner. The newspaper is toned with chipped edges. The removed magazine page is also chipped at the edges with a long 5" tear from the left edge.
