John Adams signs three times as a colonial lawyer

John Adams Autograph Document Signed Thrice. One page, 8" x 12", Suffolk County, Massachusetts, November 16, 1773. Adams' three signatures and seven hand-written lines of text occur on the verso of a partly-printed writ of attachment. The heading of the document reads, "George the Third, by the Grace of God, of Great-Britain, France and Ireland, KING" and is addressed to the county sheriff to seize "the Value of Fifty Pounds" from William Davis, a merchant from Boston, to be paid to Benjamin Tufts of Medford. (Tufts had taken Davis to court for refusing to pay for the 64,200 bricks sold to him.) A receipt of payments is affixed by wax to the recto of the writ. The document has smoothed folds with minor staining. The document has completely separated along the central horizontal fold.

The document is signed twice on the verso by Francis Dana, who later served as a delegate from Massachusetts to the Continental Congress from 1777-1778 and again in 1784 (he signed the Articles of Confederation in 1778). S. Greenleaf, sheriff of Suffolk County, has also signed.
