DescriptionJohann Blumenbach Autograph Letter Signed. One page with integral address cover, 8.5" x 9.8"; Goettingen; March 30, . Written in German and addressed to J.F.W. Herschel, possibly the English astronomer. Blumenbach sends his thanks for portraits of one "unhappy royal couple" which are enriching his collection concerning the science of natural man. Signed, "J.F. Blumenbach."
Blumenbach (1752-1840) was a German zoologist and physician; he is considered to be a founder of modern anthropology.
Condition: Scattered foxing throughout, with toning. Right margin of letter is heavily creased with multiple small tears with some paper loss affecting the end of Blumenbach's signature. The signature is also affected by ink burn. Address cover has soiling, tearing and paper loss resulting from where the wax seal was torn open. Previous collector has written "Blumenbach" and the number "5150" on verso in pencil. Annotations in pencil in top left corner of letter.
