    Description

Jerome D. Salinger Typed Letter Signed "JDS", with Five Teeth Molds and Dental Records. Letter is one page, 5.5" x 8.5", Cornish, New Hampshire; December 8, 1988. Addressed to Dr. Louis Marino, regarding dental care. Reads in full: "Thank you for you [sic] thoughtful inquiry. As far as I know, any further dental work isn't needed at present. Some extensive root-canal work was done locally a couple of years ago, then some new partial dentures made, and things seem to have gone along satisfactory. Thanks, though, and a happy and good New Year to you, too." Accompanied by the original transmittal cover.

Accompanying the letter are Salinger's 1983 dental records as well as two dental records for Dorothy McKeown, who was Salinger's publishing agent and who had referred Salinger to Marino's dentistry practice. There are also five x-rays of McKeown's teeth dating from 1981-1989. And finally, there are five molds taken of Salinger's teeth, made in plaster and plastic, displaying models and impressions of the author's teeth.
Jerome David Salinger (1919-2010) is best known for his novel, The Catcher in the Rye, which would go on to inspire generations of disillusioned youths. At the time this letter was written, the elderly Salinger, aged 69 years, no doubt needed dental assistance and was helped with a referral from his longtime literary agent. Dorothy McKeown is best known for representing Salinger during his publication for The Catcher in the Rye.

Condition: Typed letter has flattened mail folds and is boldly signed. The dental records have flattened folds, with some small separations. Toning and light soiling. Dental molds have varying degrees of wear and soiling.
