JEFFERSON DAVIS SIGNED CHECK. Following the collapse of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis was tormented by the federal government for several years on charges of what we would today call 'war crimes.'  Ultimately, all charges were neutralized, and the erstwhile President of the CSA traveled extensively throughout the South and abroad.  In 1869 he accepted the presidency of the Carolina Life Insurance Company which was based in Memphis.  He held that post until his resignation in 1873.  During the interim (February 4, 1871, to be precise), he signed this check.  It was drawn from his account at the Savings Bank of Memphis and advanced to a company called F.W. Clark.  The check itself bears a 2-cent postage stamp suggesting that it was dispatched without the benefit of an envelope.  The check is technically VG/EX due to a moderate tear, which likely constituted its cancellation.  The signature is a beauty, and would be welcomed into any fine collection as 9 in quality.
